At Tampa International Airport, digital signage is doing far more than displaying information. Under the leadership of Doug Wycoff, Director of Digital Technologies and Innovation, it has become a core part of how the airport communicates, operates, drives revenue, and creates a better passenger experience.
For his vision, innovation, and measurable impact, Doug Wycoff is the latest recipient of the Poppulo Impact Award.
Building a More Intelligent Airport Experience
Doug has spent nearly 20 years at Tampa International Airport, helping shape an environment known for its elegance, efficiency, and consistently high passenger satisfaction. Over that time, he has led the airport’s evolution from legacy monitors and isolated signage to a connected, intelligent digital ecosystem.
What began as a single installation has grown into a network of 50+ LED deployments today—with plans to scale to more than 175 LED locations over the next few years as part of major modernization efforts across the airport.
For Doug, the goal is not simply more screens. It is a smarter, more responsive airport—one that anticipates passenger needs while supporting operations at scale.
Turning Signage Into Strategy
What sets Doug’s approach apart is how tightly digital signage is tied to business outcomes.
At TPA, signage is not treated as a cost center—it is a strategic investment. By pairing digital infrastructure with advertising opportunities, Doug and his team have built a model where screens not only improve communication, but also generate significant revenue.

Today, Tampa International’s digital signage network contributes to $5-6 million in annual advertising revenue, with many deployments achieving ROI in as little as three years—followed by years of pure profit.
That financial discipline has been key to unlocking executive buy-in and accelerating innovation.
Rather than pitching signage as a standalone initiative, Doug embeds it into broader capital projects—ensuring digital experiences are part of the foundation, not an afterthought.
The Right Information—At the Right Moment
Across Tampa International, digital signage plays a critical role in delivering real-time, contextual communication.
From dynamic updates in shuttle areas to automated messaging during weather-related ramp closures, signage ensures passengers always understand what’s happening—and why. In baggage claim, travelers are kept informed during delays. In the cell phone lot, 64-foot LED displays provide live flight information, transforming a traditionally overlooked space into a more informed and comfortable experience.

These use cases are powered by automation and integration—from lightning detection systems triggering real-time messaging, to operational data dynamically updating displays across the airport.
The result is a more transparent, less stressful passenger journey.
Designing for Elegance—Not Clutter
TPA’s reputation for passenger experience is no accident. Doug and his team believe that digital signage should enhance—not overwhelm—the environment.
That philosophy has led to a shift toward large, contiguous LED canvases that replace fragmented signage arrays. These installations are cleaner, more flexible, and more aligned with the airport’s premium aesthetic.
It’s an approach that prioritizes clarity, calm, and confidence—helping passengers feel at ease from arrival to departure.
As Doug puts it:
“Airports should feel less like a chaotic transit hub and more like a welcoming, thoughtfully designed destination. That’s what we’ve built at TPA—and we’re continuing to evolve it.”
A Transformation at Scale
Some of the most ambitious work is still ahead.

Tampa International is currently advancing several major projects—including the $1.5 billion Airside D terminal, a $300 million ticketing modernization, and a $300 million baggage system transformation—all of which will incorporate digital signage at scale.
These projects will introduce massive, flexible digital canvases across the airport, including a 20,000-square-foot LED installation—one of the largest of its kind in the industry—designed to deliver immersive, experience-led content that creates a true “wow” moment for travelers.
Doug’s vision extends beyond functionality. It’s about creating an environment that passengers remember.
Recognizing Lasting Impact
Doug Wycoff’s work at Tampa International Airport is a powerful example of how digital signage can drive both experience and performance. By combining innovation, automation, and financial forethought, he has built a program that improves the passenger journey while delivering measurable business value.
Reflecting on this award, Doug stated, “At TPA, we approach and win things as a team, so this award is certainly one for the entire team. And I include Poppulo when I talk about our team, as they have been a great partner, helping us bring our vision for digital signage to life.”
Ruth Fornell, Poppulo CEO, shared, “Doug’s leadership at Tampa International Airport exemplifies what’s possible when digital signage is treated as both strategic and part of a future-focused vision. His ability to connect passenger experience, operational efficiency, and measurable ROI sets a new benchmark—not just for airports, but for the entire industry.”
Doug’s impact is already visible across TPA—and with major expansions underway, it’s clear the best is still to come.
