We love a good trade show at Newsweaver. We are very partial to the intimate and friendly events that are synonymous with the internal communications industry: SMILE, Melcrum, and ALI, to name a few. This year, however, in addition to our usual favorites, we decided to venture into the formerly unknown territory of the HR event. The first such event was the HRD Summit in Birmingham.
A trade show on a much larger scale to what we have become accustomed to, there were over 500 HR directors, vice presidents and chief HR officers in the ICC over the two days of the HRD Summit. The buzz was palpable, with several talks happening at any one time, covering everything from employee engagement and well-being to change management and organizational design. It was a very thorough and engaging conference all round, seamlessly executed and hugely enjoyable. The Summit has a reputation for having strong content, and it was easy to see why it’s one of the flagship events in the HR calendar.
Highlights included talks from Jens Hofma, CEO of Pizza Hut, who spoke of how the business turned around after a decade of decline through a people and culture strategy; Thinkers 50 speakers Tammy Erickson and Lynda Gratton; and former England Rugby Head Coach Sir Clive Woodward, who spoke of the importance of sharing knowledge, and never assuming you know it all.
At the Newsweaver stand, we were delighted to meet plenty of new faces, as our first foray into HR events proved to be a fruitful endeavor, with several learnings made along the way. We are already looking forward to next year’s offering.
Internal communications and HR can be very closely linked, and when they work together, they can be a strong and potent force for engaging employees. As specialists in internal communications, we were delighted to have the chance to meet with so many senior HR leaders and talk about how to make the most of that relationship. With that in mind, there has been a lot of interest in our free on-demand webinar on that very topic. Click here to watch Andy Blacknell’s webinar: Internal Communicators and HR: Friend or Foe?
